Music.Culture.Jumping Up.Traditions Passed down.
I remember experiencing St. Thomas Carnival 1995. I was 6 years old chipping down the street holding my mother’s hand. The feeling of a big truck and the steel pan vibrating through your body is inexplicable and I encourage everyone to experience the liberation of singing and dancing in the street with thousands of people from across the diaspora.
A few years later I would continue my immersion into the culture and learn the art of stilt dancing. There is a respect given to Moko Jumbie and a responsibility to our people that is honored each time we perform. My sister and I would practice willingly and unwillingly, perform at every black history, juneteenth,multi-cultural event, and carnival in the Central Florida area. I loved how connected to our people it makes me feel.
